- What is the meaning and the concept behind the name of your music project?

CDO (Cosmic Disruption Orchestra) started out as a response to my interest in the fiction of H. P. Lovecraft. This changed into a Noise project (more of this in the next answer): the interaction between different noise elements such as rhythm and/or texture. Now it is about a more ‘traditional’ approach looking at different styles like Metal and Jungle. But next year may be different as I feel I’ve covered what I can so far this year.

- What equipment do you use for create music?

I started using Adobe Audition but it was limited (by bad programming) regarding the plugins it was able to accept which was limited. Since the start of this year, I have been using Tracktion Waveform. I am able to record with a couple of digital interfaces but that has been limited so far.

- Tell us a little biography about your project, when  you started to make music?

In 2016 I recorded my first EP experimenting with something close to Cold Wave and Minimal Electronica. A second EP followed in the next year showing that I had advanced my creativity (listening to it now feels strange but refreshing). A longer release ‘Awakening Through Dream’ appeared in 2018, where I start using glitch techniques as an integral part of the music creation process along with longer track times. ‘Unnameable Vistas’ was released in the same year showing an affinity for surrealism. ‘From The Stars’ in 2019 is unmistakably  (both visually and in music) a nod to Lovecraft and film soundtracks (including the use of lower frequencies) on top of the surrealist tone. Also in the same year, I released ‘The Longed For Journey’ continuing on from the previous album. And in 2020 before the hiatus ‘Beyond Dreams And Wastelands’ was released where noise was used as something to be imposed on the listener where frequencies clash amongst each other. In late 2023 ‘Caressed By Angel Wings’ appeared marking a new interest in making music by myself and the last album on which I would use Adobe Audition. In 2024 there were the albums ‘House of Curiosities’, ‘Aion’, ‘ Fall of the Digital Empire’ and ‘Ramshackle, misfits and malarkey’ (the last here being a collection of unused ideas and tracks which didn’t seem to fit). Closing the year was a compilation of remixes/interpretations ‘Shadows and Like Grains of Sand REMIXES’ where 2 tunes from ’Ramshackle..’ were used and abused.

- Who are your main music and artistic influences?

In no particular order: Aphex Twin/AFX/Polygon Window/The Tuss, Nurse With Wound, Nine Inch Nails, Rock/Metal, Autechre, Kryztof Penderecki, early Jungle, there are many others.

- What underground artists from the netlabel scene do you like?

I listen to artists whenever I can although there’s nothing specific as I have either wanted to create music like that which I’ve heard or I’m amazed by the creativity of these artists and I feel that I could improve what I’m creating.

- Do you have some influence from your country in your music?

Yes, as I mentioned earlier, there’s the music but also the social and political landscape which doesn’t look so stable as it should to me: I’ve never been a fan of authority figures who shouldn’t be allowed anywhere near positions where they can negatively affect the majority.

- What is your favorite album/ep composed by you? And why?

That’s a difficult question to answer as each release has paved the way for where I am at the current time.

- What are your preferred music platforms/websites? Why?

Bandcamp as it offers a free service but also a paid version. Also, they appear to like promoting artists who are less well known and they are not taking alot of money for themselves when it should go to the artists instead.

- Do you play live? How was the experience?

I had been in groups that played live before but even though it was fun and exciting I always felt like the songwriting process didn’t let ideas move the group forward. I prefer CDO as a studio only project.

- Any news for 2025?

I’m starting production on a new album trying to use a different approach but I’m not sure how it will turn out (I don’t work to a plan as such, just create what I feel at the time and it can be a very spontaneous way of making music or any type of art). 

I would like to make an actual collaboration album where ideas are exchanged and both or all musicians turn the others ideas into something away from the original idea. That would provide a different creative environment for me in that it would be a challenge and provoke a new and exciting way to work.

Today we did an interview to the german experimental composer EISENLAGER.

First say welcome to this written interview for Cian Orbe blog.

hello my friend, thank you for invite me to answer your questions.

- What is the meaning of the word "EISENLAGER"?  

In German EISENLAGER means a place where iron is stored, for example. in a factory that works with iron or makes things out of iron. When I founded EISENLAGER in 1999, I found my music cold industrial and hard and so the name was a good fit. later i thought the name no longer fits and i started to publish music under the name midnightradio11. however, a few years ago i went back to the origin and changed all publications under the name EISENLAGER

- Which is the concept behind your music project, how you categorize your own music?  

the concept of my music doesn't exist because that would mean that I started working as EISENLAGER in 1999 with a certain intention. but the only reason was that i wanted to create something and that i had to be creative and that is not a concept but a feeling. my music can be described as a kind of electronic KRAUTROCK and film music for films that only exist in your head. everyone who hears it and closes their eyes can experience their own film. maybe it's AVANTGARDE too, but one day other people will decide. in short, it is my diary and an echo of world events and history. but to put it briefly, it is 1.0.1.0.1.0 etc.

- Do you release music only under EISENLAGER name? do you have other active or past music projects, monikers?

yes i only publish under EISENLAGER as i already mentioned there was also a phase where i worked under the names midnightradio11 & 21 gramm, which is over, everything is only created under this one term / word EISENLAGER. when i work with other musicians no project name is used but both artists are named. Once there was an exception, a good friend of has a project called: Im Wesen. When we made an album together we called the project EISENWESEN

- Favorite music genres? 

Everything is possible, that means that i find something good from all musical genres, really all of them. I don't want to name an electronic music genre as a huge cliché just because I make electronic music, well, I want to; -) DARK AMBIENT or to make it even shorter, almost everything from the great label: Cold Meat Industry

- In what year did you start making music? which was your first band/project?

In 1999 I founded EISENLAGER. in the eighties i made some experiments with music that had been edited from vinyl records to casette, a kind of remix, redesign of songs, there was no project name and the tapes are all lost

 

- Which inspiration you have from the place where you live? There's some inspiration from your country in your music?

I don't think so, but you have to say that electronic music had its experimental beginnings in Germany in the 50/60 years. maybe the experimental is in my DNA, who knows. what influences me so much, no idea. maybe just my brain after i had a beer or two pieces of cake

 

- Which are your favorite music projects and visual/plastic artists who inspire your work?

I have already said something about how I am and whether I am influenced at all, but of course there is art that I particularly love, and that includes without a doubt DAVID BOWIE, La Düsseldorf (a 70/80 years band by Klaus Dinger, who worked with Michael Rother made music under the name Neu!
i love the film: CHRISTIANE F. WE KINDER VON BAHNHOF ZOO from 1982, I have to watch it once a year. i love the gothic scene and was immersed in it at the beginning of the nineties and since then until today i only wear black, also because it makes your life easier ;-)
SILKE BISCHOFF SISTERS OF MERCY and what would we do without THE CURE? this is just a speck of dust that I can mention here. if we both sat together with a beer or gin, we would be able to talk about these things for 189 hours.

 

- How do you see the current Experimental / Drone music scene?

I don't care. I can't say anything about it because I don't know anything about it. i am not an analyst, i am a wanderer in worlds and i consume art and scene without having to know why everything is the way it is and was and will become

 

- Favorite drone, dark ambient, experimental composers?

There we are again at 189 hours ;-) what can I say, too much what I love, GAS, Geir Jenssen, GUSGUS, DAFT PUNK, Endraum, Katatonia, Neil Young, Nick Cave, Type O Negative, Underworl, old Tangerine Dream, Brian Eno, Coil, Global Communication, La Düsseldorf Harmonia Neu!, Lustmord, Pete Namlook, Roedelius, Solar Fields, The Field, John Carpenter and many more.
and excuse me, i can see now that your question was more specific to certain music styles, no matter, let's leave it at that ;-)

- Do you make live performances?

No. I don't even know how to do it live on stage. it is impossible. I could just run a tape and, while wearing sunglasses, bend over a computer and smoke a lot of cigarettes and pretend I'm unearthly ;-)

 

- Which is your favorite song or composition and album created by yourself?
 

Always the latest. but i really enjoy all of the albums that i have made with Gabriel Pereira Spurr. but it's unfair because i love all the albums i have made with others. i love everything about me all the same and i love myself  and love life and EISENLAGER ;-)

I don't talk about how I make music and what hardware and software I use because I'm bored. this is a compulsion that everything has to be explained. enjoy it without a head, enjoy it with a heart. why do i need to know what kind of oil a picture was painted with? i don't need to know and i don't need to know why my mother's food tastes so damn good. I don't have to know anything. i don't have to be an artist to make art. myself you and all people are art. I leave the special things and knowledge to a few experts and science. EISENLAGER is my soul and believe me my friend, my soul cannot be explained. the reason why i did the album (AMBIENT FOR LANELL DUPUY) was, i wanted to make LANELL DUPUY happy and surprise her. always remember, no one will one day tell their children how they were injected into their mothers as sperm and tell the details of the evening. let everything be a miracle, or at least every now and then ;-)

- Tell us about the underground music scene in Germany, and which are your favorite artists from your country?

I really don't know and I'm afraid you are disappointed in me now. but such things are not my priorities and are unimportant for me personally. you see, i'm pretty boring and not a good interview partner. But it really is, I am me and out there is everyone else. they make their music art and things and i do that too. sometimes our paths cross and we hug and make music together, sometimes not and we fly by. that's not more. yes there are more and experts will be able to talk about them. that is not me

 - You have released so many albums in countries around the globe. What inspire you to create more and more content?  From where you find the inspiration for be a prolific artist?
 

Sometimes I sit here and think it's too much. not for myself but when I distribute it on facebook. I am a little ashamed then. I do not know why. but there are times when i just can't stop making music. after 30 minutes i leave a horror movie on netflix because i have to make music. something in me makes me do it and it makes me so happy. yes, every now and then I have a break, but not because I impose it on myself, it happens by itself. I cannot explain the exact reasons why art happens exactly as it happens because I don't know and don't want to know. but the inspiration simply comes from the 24 hours of a day that i live

- Any anecdote that you want to share with us in the creation of some track?

Yes. I once put the microphone in my girlfriend's vagina to record a sound for a piece. the piece is called: Inter Vaginal Tonaufnahme from the album, Ton1

 

 - Any news for 2021 in your music project or future collaborations? 

There will also be a lot of new music in 2021. 4-5 albums are already finished and some are in progress. an album with M.Nomized is in the works and a new HIMMELHOLZSTEG 7. and THE JOY DIVISION 14, but many things also come about spontaneously, also work together.

- Any other thing that you want to say to your listeners?

First say welcome to this written interview for Cian Orbe blog. Today in our blog we discover the thoughts and main inspirations of the dark ambient italian composer Mebitek.

- What is the meaning of Mebitek name?
 

Mebitek is the union of my native language surname “mebi” and the word teknology. It is with me since 2002.

- Do you release music only under Mebitek name? do you have other active or past music projects or monikers?

Yes, since last year I have a side project called “Where Orchids Goes To Die”. It’s an electro music duo with the female voice of the Mapuche artist Mariana Millapan.

- Which are the concept behind your music, how you categorize your own work?  
 

Mebitek’s music concept is inspired on cinematic art experimentation. Over all, darkness inconsicous philosophy, driving the music and visual structure in conjunction with some kind of old victorian romanticism and melancholy with the purpose of transform electronic music into a cinematic orchestra.

- Favorite music genres?

I haven’t a favorite music genre really, but I like to listen a lot of dark music from ambient to various electronic genres. Apart hip-hop, electro swing,  trip-hop, dark ambient and also black metal. And horror soundtracks too. I also like so much some kind of folk music from around the world, specially from those oppressed people who fight for independence.

- How you see the concept of the darkness, why you make dark ambient and not ambient or space drone music?

Darkness concept is something primordial in my productions, from music to videos. I think that from the inner depth of humanity, we can find some darkness that rules the whole game of life.  If you go deeply into that darkness you will find the real essence of yourself.

- In what year did you start making music? which was your first band/project?

I started making music in 1996.  First with a computer (an intel i486), with a project called “Count Mebi.” Was influenced by black metal (with screams included) mixed with electronic music. Later in the year 2000, i moved from my land Sardinia to Bologne (Italy). I met the undeground electronic scene of the tekno and the teknival culture with a whole of new music arsenal.

- Which inspiration you have from the place where you live? There's some inspiration from your country in your music?

Sardinia is my land and it is a place with glorious nature landscapes. It’s also very savage with hard winds violently blowing the island. Sardinia has an ancient culture that mixes some magical rituals that active nowadays. Facing nature and the natural connection between Sardinia ancient culture I find both physically and visually inspirations.

- Which are your favorite music projects and visual/plastic artists who inspire your work?

The first name that comes in my mind is the norwegian band “Ulver”. Lot of creativity and music fluid project. I also love so much Atrium Carceri with his dark ambient atmospheres. 

About visual artists that I love are for example: Mothmeister, Stefan Gesell , Darla Teagarden and Anton Semanov. Also I absolutely have to mention the director  David Lynch: he is my main inspiration in some particular visual concepts.

- How do you see the current Dark Ambient  / Drone Noise music scene? 

 
There are lot of dark ambient artists actually in the scene that create lot of original music. But happens in a lot of genres  - not only for dark ambient, there is some kind of saturation and not all the productions are good.

- Favorite dark ambient and electronic composers?

Atrium Carceri, Wordclock, Phonotek, Flowers of Bodysnatchers.

- Do you make live performances?

- yes I perform live since 2002. My latest live was postponed due pandemic, originally for august with my side project “Where Orchids Goes To Die.”

- We have seen that you produce  Videoclips for your music, tell us about the process and creation of it?

I’m a video producer too. I start making my own videos like 5 years ago, when decided add some  cinematic aspects to my work. I started making only video clips but nowadays. I produce also shortfilms that got some awards. My latest one “A story of Silence” won the Rome Art Week 2020 and it was projected in the Miami New Media Festival and will be projected in 13 countries around the world too.
 

- Which is your favorite song or composition and album created by yourself?

I want to mention “The Unconscous” track and also the videoclip. Because it’s the first of my new artistic life (after over 10 years making tekno) and it’s the first track of my triology based on Carl Jung inconsious theories. It was the first time that I make a videoclip for a track, so I like so much the creativity process involced into it.

- Tell us about the concept & the creation process of one of your latest works " "The Mourning Path" released by Mangoest records

The Mourning Path borns was a short film, made in collaboration with my friend Jele Raus. It tells about the story of the death of girl facing all her life monsters in the last times before she dies.

The soundtrack has be written after the shortfilm story so it tries to reflect all the short film feelings and situations.  It has been produced all with my maschine and in part with my modular synthetizer.
 

- Tell us about the underground music scene in Italy or in your zone, and which are your favorite artists from your country?

Italy and in specially Sardinia is not so much related with dark music, so I don't know artsists involved in that kind of sound and neither in their sub-genres. But, however Sardinia has a great variety of artists that make various qualitative music genres like Jazz, Rock, Folk, Electronic and hip hop.

 
- Any anecdote that you want to share with us in the creation of some track?

Music creation is a strange process talking very personally. I feel it with pain and alienation. So i can tell you that each track comes different and in special ways, from instumentation to the final result.

- Any news for 2021 in your music project or future collaborations?

In 2021 i just wanna release my new mebitek album that was forced to be postponed due to the pandemic. Also I’m preparing some video too for it. Totally apart i’m planning to release some new material for my side proejct “Where Orchids Goes To Die” and I’m actually working with Jele Raus at a web series called “A Story of Silence”.  I hope 2021 will be full of news from my side.
 

- Any other thing that you want to say to your listeners?
