In this time we make an interview to the dark electronic, industrial, witch house artist Insatiable Void from US.

- What is the meaning of Insatiable Void name?

The name Insatible Void has actually has a very personal meaning. I am autistic, but I didn't discover this until later in life. I always knew something was different about me, and it caused me great suffering for my whole life. Because of this I chose to self medicate. For 15 years I heavily used hard drugs and alcohol to try and fix what was wrong with me. Finally, after almost dying several times I decided to quit self medicating. During my recovery period I felt a gaping hole within my being that absolutely nothing would fill. I named this hole the Insatiable Void. I vowed that when I started to feel better I would create a band named Insatiable Void. Now I know why I am the way that I am, and have received proper care for my condition. However, the Insatiable Void will always be within me.

 

- Do you release music only under Insatiable Void name? do you have other active or past music projects or monikers?

I will only use the name Insatiable Void for any music or art project that I do for the forseeable future. I am Insatiable Void. That is who I am.

- Which are the concept behind your music, how you categorize your own work?  

I don't really have any specific concept. I just start playing, and whatever comes out is what I do. As for catagorization... Unclear, Just dark electronic in various forms.

 

- Favorite music genres?

Anything dark electronic. Industrial, EBM, Darkwave, Dark Ambient, Witch House, Ect.

 

- How you define the concept of darkness into your own sound? Why you choose create dark electronic music, and not other electronic more easy listening genres like techno, house, etc?

I have always enjoyed and identified with a dark asthetic. Horror movies, Dark imagery, occult and demonology writings. I'm not sure why, but I've always liked the darker stuff. That said, it was only natural for me to gravitate towards dark music for listening and creating.

- in what year did you start making music? which was your first band/project?

Hmmm, I've played around with trying to learn how to make music since high school... So, around 1996 or 97, but nothing serious. I started working on what would be Insatiable Void about 8 years ago. I made what I called practice tracks every once in a while up until about 2.5 years ago when I decided it was time to make it a serious hobby.

 

- Which inspiration you have from the place where you live? There's some inspiration from your country in your music?

There are plenty of good artists from USA, but my influence comes from artists from around the world. I've listened to dark electronic for about 25 years coming from many countries.

 

- Which are your favorite music projects and visual/plastic artists who inspire your work?

This is hard for me to answer. All of it gets jumbled together in my head. The first band to introduce me to the world of dark electronic was Skinny Puppy. The one visual artist that comes to mind as a favorite is H.R. Giger. So many artist inspire me as a collective though. No one artist I like inspires me more than another.

 

- How do you see the current Industrial / Witch House music scene?

I only really have access to what I am exposed to online. There are many talented artists making industrial and witch house. The sounds are evolving over time, sometimes very quickly. I'm always excited to hear what is coming next.

 

- Favorite Industrial and Witch House composers?

Gosh... Another very difficult question. I listen to so much, it's hard to keep track. I feel strange trying to name drop anyone specific. I like it all lol

 

- You are a very prolific artist, from where you find this continuos inspiration for create more and more content?

I don't think I'm THAT prolific. I would do much more if I had the time. I just really like creating sounds as an outlet. All I really do is sit down, start playing around with sounds, and whatever kind of song or noise that comes out is what I make. I rarely have any kind of direction when I start. I just wing it, and hope it turns out okay.

 

- Are you interested in the future of release your music in other labels/netlabels  apart of Cian Orbe/Witch Spectra? 

It depends. Anyone is free to release my music as long as they give me credit. I would never sign with a label that has any kind of restriction. I will always reserve the right to give away my music for free. I recently joined the WhyNo†!? RecordS collective. He asked me to join, and I like the group.

 

- Why you choose don't sell your music? Do you think in the future make some profit with your artistic work?

I strongly believe in the right to free art. I'm fine if others want to make money from making music, but that's just not me. My music will always be free. I make music because it's what I like to do, not because I want money.

 

- Do you make live performances? or you are interested in make it the future?

I have not yet performed live. It does seem like it would be fun though. I may do it in the future if anyone shows an interest in having me.

 

 

- You have an album series in your bandcamp called "Oldies, B​-​Sides, and Collaborations"

tell us about it. We have always seen that you love collaborations, which have been your favorites?

That collection is pretty self explanitory. It is a collection composed of tracks made before the first track currently posted on my soundcloud account, collaborations with friends I have made on soundcloud, and other tracks I just didn't feel like putting on a different album. My favorites are actually when you put out an acapella by Mist and I can write music to it :)

 

- Which is your favorite song or composition and album created by yourself?

REALLY hard one... I both hate and love everything I make.

 

- Tell us about the concept & the creation process of one of your latest works " "Wonders That Deceive The Elect"

This, in my opinion, is probably my sloppiest main album. I was going through a really hard time, and I just kind of slapped some tracks in to an album. I think there are some really good tracks on it, but I definitely rushed it to completion. The noise track in the middle "existence" is basically an audio version of my mind state during this period.

 

- Tell us about the underground music scene in Florida state, and if want tell us your favorite artists from your country?

I don't really know much about the local scene here. Due to my social anxiety, I don't talk to many people, or get out of the house much. There are a few local bands I have heard that are pretty good. One group, Batávia, has allowed me to remix one of their tracks. It isn't out yet though.

 

- Any anecdote that you want to share with us in the creation of some track?

The second track currently posted on my soundcloud is "Grandma's Haunted Porch". My favorite memories are spending halloween at my grandmothers house. She made a haunted porch with monster dummies sitting all around. I would wear a gorilla costume and sit in the middle of the dummies. When trick or treaters would come to visit, I would jump out and scare the crap out of them. Great times. Anyway, That song features samples from the cassette of halloween sounds that she would play every year.

 

- Any news for 2021 in your music project or future collaborations?

Will be a new long duration album and a new side album coming very soon! You can listen to my progress on Soundcloud. I have playlists for Future main albums, and Future side albums too.

 

- Any other thing that you want to say to your listeners?

Love you. Hope you like some of my tracks. I know that I post different styles, and you aren't going to like everything, but that's okay. I never expected anyone to listen to my music in the first place, so it's an honor to be recognised by my peers! Thanks to everyone :)

First say welcome to this written interview for Cian Orbe blog. Today we make an interview to the german/american industrial dark electronic duo Cyanbaal.

-What means the name: Cyanbaal?

Actually, "Cyanbaal" has no meaning. But someone from "Musiktelegramm Online Magazine" found out. He wrote:

"Cyan is the color that is neither green nor blue. And depending on mythology, Baal is a demon or a god.

Cyanbaal is living contradiction. You don't know what it is. " I really like this.

 

- Which are the concept behind your music, how you categorize your own music?

We want to create creepy, strange and morbid stories in music. Corresponding images should arise in the listener's head. We use all means of sound that are available to us. Analog, digital synthesizers, samplers, field recordings, drum computers .....

Everything that is suitable to achieve appropriate sounds is used.

It should mostly sound atmospheric and scary.

Due to the diverse musical interests that influence us, it is therefore difficult to find a clear allocation.

For the sake of simplicity, I have called it Electro Dark Wave / Post Industrial.

Sometimes there are also synth pop elements or cold wave.

I also like to break through listening habits or deviate from classic arrangements.

-This year we know a new Cyanbaal member: Haether Wayward. tell us about her.

We got to know each other through the social networks. In autumn 2019 we met with several Dark Electro Music fans in East Germany. There we went to concerts by „Fix8 Sed8“ and „Pyroline“. At the end of the weekend we had the idea to make music together. I've been looking for a singer for a long time.

We share a lot of interests and musically we fit together perfectly. It is a lot of fun to work with her. She has a lot of good ideas and turns songs that I have sometimes given up into something special.

 

HW /// How do you feel the experience of be member of Cyanbaal?

It has been amazingly fun. I was already a huge fan of Patrick before we met. I very much enjoy this very unique style of minimalistic dark, creepy songs with humor. Patrick has welcomed me to the project with openness and gave me full creative freedom and has embraced it. Right away he encouraged my own writings and vocals. It has really worked out perfectly. He pulls something out of me that surprises myself at times. We have made a lot of progress in one album together and it keeps going as the next album is already in process. Being across the pond from each other can be challenging but many trips are already in planning. Just waiting for the world to open again.

 

HW /// Favorite Bands, Music projects?

My all time favorite band is Click Click. I also like more commonly known bands like Front Line Assembly, Skinny Puppy, Covenant, Solitary Experiments which  all had good time periods.  But I like many different styles like This Mortal Coil, Numb, Coil, Diorama, Soil and Eclipse, and more recent bands like Statiqbloom, Fix8:Sed8 and The Opposer Divine.  I am currently listening to Amorphus, Circumpolar, Black Nail Cabaret and Placebo Effect. I have interests in further listing to Minuit Machine, 11 grams, Frame of Mind. I even enjoy projects like TV HWY and Access to Arasaka.

 

HW/// Are you member of other music projects? do you had some in the past?

I have been into the ‘industrial/gothic’ scene since the early mid 80s. Cyanbaal has been my only personal project. I have worked a little with some bands doing intimate reviews and by providing sampling. I am working along side James Mendez of Jihad for a small fun project. Others have approached me about making a song or so. I am open to the idea for I think all artists have something to express and together with another can be a completely different experience. However, there is no one out there making music like Cyanbaal and I am very proud to be a part of this project.

 

- Do you release music only under Cyanbaal name of you have other monikers or music projects, bands?

At the moment I only publish under Cyanbaal. But I like to work with other people, even if it unfortunately happens very rarely.

I'm still working on another project. It's a Dark Ambient Project and I hope to publish something in the near future.

- In what year did you start making music? which was your first band/project?

I am already older. It must have been 1994. The music project / band was called "Syndrom 21", later "Schadow Basement". "Syndrome 21" was too reminiscent of "Trisome 21".

We had a small studio in a basement. In our house on Schadowstrasse. Hence the name. People always thought it should be called "Shadow Basement". But the name came from Johan Gottfried Schadow, the sculptor. So Schadow, not shadow. :)

It wasn't until 2014 that I founded "Cyanbaal". But very, very many songs are old "Schadow Basment" songs.

 

- Which inspiration you have from the place where you live? There's some inspiration from your country in your music?

I like my home region very much. I don't know if it inspires me musically. Probably a little. The place I live in is very idyllic and has a little dark romance. We have a lot of hilly forests. I call "Buchholz" (the place I live in) the "Dunwich" of Germany. In the vicinity there are many old castle ruins but also old collieries and steelworks that are almost all shut down today. We call it industrial romance. Maybe that's the reason for the industrial elements in a lot of the songs. :)

 

- Which are your favorite music projects and visual/plastic artists who inspire your work?

I'm a huge "Skinny Puppy" fan. As far as Gothic Rock is concerned, "Fields of the Nephilim" was my number one. These bands have accompanied me in my life. Today I like to hear "Lustmord" and Atrium Carceri. I get calmer with age. :)

As for art, I like fantastic art, surealism. Max Ernst, Rene Magritte, Joan Miro and of course H. R. Giger. :)

But my music is very much influenced by writers and films. I'm a huge H.P. Lovecraft fan. I also like Neil Gaiman, David Lynch and Tim Burton.

 

HW:  Click Click is my biggest influence. Their unleashed freedom of expression is pure. Edward Ka-Spel has also been largely influential. Honestly my life has not been a quiet one, and I draw a lot of influence from personal experience and dreams. I am also a Lovecraft and Burton fan, with a little bit of Anne Rice and Clive Barker.

 

 - How do you see the current industrial, dark electronic  music scene?

I think the music has developed a lot in the direction of "techno". Much sounds very similar!

I have the impression that the musicians are focusing to be evil and aggressive.

It's okay, but it's not quite my world. I like it more subtle and more eerie, with a dark mood. And it's nice when it's more experimental and maybe breaks listening habits.

To be honest I don't know a lot of new bands.

Back then I used to go to clubs or festivals more often.

Today I listen to many old bands and reminisce about them. But every now and then I find current projects and bands that I like. It's just hard to find these bands today.

 

HW: Ive seen a huge uprising in the past 10 or so years. A lot try to mimic the sounds of yesteryear. But there has been a decent number of really great bands.  I do like the “Post punk” sound but too many are doing it and so only a few really stand out.  The “EBM/Dark Wave” scene has really blossomed as well. Still, It’s a tough go at finding something that doesn’t “sound like” someone has done it before. But those who do original material really shine.  I hate labels. So I won’t even go into the millions of “genres” that could be mentioned here. Good music is a matter of perspective. Unique music is hard to find.

- Do you play live performances?

So far, Cyanbaal has been a pure studio project.

But we will actually play live in winter 2021/22.

We got some nice inquiries and we were very happy about it. So we decided to give a couple of concerts.

 

- Which is your favorite song and album created by yourself?

I fluctuate between "Cautionary Tales" and "Living Tunnel".

"Cautionary Tales" feels a little bit more varied to me. Haether alone has greatly upgraded Cyanbaal. On the current album, the vocal tracks are much better too.

The question of my favorite song is difficult.

I like "Shimmering Darkness" a lot. But I also really like "Madame Degradation". It's very dark. Otherwise "Mirage", "Schizophrenia" and "Dancing Idiots".

 

HW:  I can really only comment on “Cautionary Tales”. As writer, personally I like “Taken”. It has deep meaning from 30 years of extorted past experiences. “Mirage” does too but  with “Taken” it really comes out. As a vocalist, my favorite song is “No Escape”. Its heartbreakingly beautiful about a horrible situation.  After that would be “Android Love Failing”. Its the most artistic.

 

- Tell us about the concept & the creation process of one of your latest works: "Cautionary Tales" released by  DarkSIGN Records

Oh, that was very exciting. During the creation of the album, Heather joined.

Some songs were already finished: "Shimmering Darkness", "Repressive Gold", "Figurative Self Destruction".

But many songs were still in the process of being created or in the song archive. I had sent some material to Haether. She then developed many vocal melodies and lyrics. She made suggestions for changes and took care of samples a lot. Many songs would have not turned out so well with out her ideas.

Some songs I had already written off, but by her contributions they became great songs.

Some songs are classic eerie stories set to music.

But there are also songs on the album that deal with gloomy SciFi stories and prognoses.

Some songs are inspired by SciFi books or just what might happen in the near future.

 

- Tell us about the underground music scene in Germany or in your zone. and which are your favorite artists from your country?

The region in which I live used to be a stronghold of the black scene. We had the legendary club called „Zwischenfall (Incident)“. Unfortunately it burned down. There was nothing like it later.

But there were many other clubs in our region where the scene has evolved.

But today, I think, a lot is going on in East Germany.

There is also the "Wave Gothic Treffen" and other great festivals every year. The cities of Leipzig and Dresden have nice clubs.

My favorite artists from Germany are "Haus Arafna, Echo West and" Blue Angel Lounge "(no dark electro).

 

HW: In the US our scene is very small with isolated spots in places like NY, Denver, Texas and LA. However some spots are emerging and the scene is growing. I can’t say I have looked up where every band is from but I am always on the look out for new locals bands. Nearest me, Baltimore has produced some interesting projects and seems to be a place that has laid in waiting for a long time. Bands Such as Kiss of the Whip, (the late) Precision Field, and Dan Barret of Venal Flesh and Worms of the Earth all call Baltimore home. SYZYGYX is from next door DC. My favorite bands from the eastern US would have to be Statiqbloom (NY) and Crüxshadows (FL).

 

- Any anecdote that you want to share with us in the creation of some track?

Yes! It's not always as serious and gloomy as it sounds. Often a little black humor flows into our songs.

Madame Degradation is very dark but actually it's all about the "Corpse Bride" by Tim Burton "

And in "Dancing Idiots" there is a reference to a style of music that I really like. "I like the electric shock therapy, POWERELECTRONIC".

Many people think of power electronics as noise or soul torture. :).

And "Clipped Wings" speaks for itself!

 

HW: Yes to add to Patrick, a little humor is often there. “Treachery” is about a Raven that would come to me almost every evening and hang out in the tree where I work. He stays for hours. So therefore he has his own song.

- Any news for 2021 in your music project?

We'd like to release our fourth album next year.

Otherwise we will probably start our concerts in Winter 2021/22.

And maybe the first release for my Dark Ambient project will come. That would be great.

 

- Any other thing that you want to say to your listeners?

Yes! Make music! Be creative! It's a lot of fun. Much more is possible today than in the past.

And it should always be about fun, not money. And thanks to the people who listen our music!

First say welcome to this written interview for Cian Orbe blog. This time we did an interview to the dark electronic, witch house music composer Dedalos.

- What is the meaning of the word "Dedalos"?  

It comes from one of my favorite writers: James Joyce. In his book “The Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man” I was inspired by his protagonist Stephen Dedalus. I just changed one letter. Also I like the story about Dedalus and Ikraus from the greek mythology.

 

- Which are the concept behind your music project, how you categorize your own music?

My music is emotional and atmospheric. More than just sadness and melancholy. It’s not fair to limit my music to negative emotions. There is much more: you feeling so much more when you will be responsive for humanity. For sure you can’t feel anything if you’re not emphatic.

It’s hard to categorize my music. It has elements of different genres that you can’t categorize easily. My album “Love” and the EP “Lenity” I would catogorize it as my own sub-genre: Emotional Witch House.

 

  

- Do you release music only under Dedalos name? do you have other active or past music projects?

Yes, I have more projects but I prefer not mention them. Sometimes it’s better for the creativity to be anonymous.

- Favorite music genres?

Hard to say but my favorite maybe is  Witch House.

 

- In what year did you start making music? which was your first band/project?

Started  it 2017. Under the name “Dedalus”.  Later was renamed to “Dedalos”

And now, I never thought to give an interview for Cian Orbe. Thank you!

 

- Which inspiration you have from the place where you live? There's some inspiration from your country in your music?

My country don’t give none inspiration. Maybe my main inspiration is  go away from here. I think that my inspiration is totally inside of me.

 

- Which are your favorite music projects and visual/plastic artists who inspire your work?

I find inspiration  from different artists and bands like: Archive, Anathema, Lil Peep, Veto, Gazpacho, IC3PEAK, Crystal Castles and much more. But at the end,  every time i think the same: none artist inspired me totally because my music can only exist if it’s unaffected or unalterable.

- How do you see the current Witch House / Dark Electronic music scene?

Now It gives many talented artists.

-Favorite dark electronic, witch house composers?

BLVCK CEILING, badass wolf shirt, ZOMBIERAVE, Crystal Castles, IC3PEAK, +d33b+ 

 

- How was the experience of play live performances. tell us about it.

I never played live in Germany but yes in Milano, Italy: I was very nervous but it’s incredible to share my music and emotions with the crowd. I meet many artists: Tying Tiffany aka Laurapalmer, RedHat aka Deyeying from Hooded Leaders, Arnak and the guys of the EK4T3 Collective: D3M0N, D4rk3r Side, PxL and more. Big thanks and much love to EK4T3 to organize this events. Thanks for all Davide!

- Which is your favorite song or composition and album created by yourself?

I like the song “Remedy”. It starts slow but with progressive sound. After the half of the track and  turns  more electronic as the first half.

The album “Love” is my saddest work and every track fits to the concept. Start like a circle with the end of a relationship and ends with love. I think that is crazy. A suffer episode is so hard and brings you to the limit to bear of pain but you have still have the courage to suffer again when you find someone new and it’s great. The circle begins again and again... Music to cry. 

 

- Tell us about the concept & the creation process of one of your latest work "Mantra" self-released

There is not much to say about it,  I answered this previously but about my album “Love.” And if i tlak about “Mantra” I don’t had really a concept for this one. I felt relieved after end the production of “Love” album and later, i  started with “Mantra” and that’s all.  I feel that is really easy work on something what you don’t need a strict concept. So I was free to work on “Mantra” without giving it much thought and I had fun with the production. 

 

- Tell us about the underground music scene in Germany, and which are your favorite artists from your country?

Well, one artist from Germany “Dazzling Malicious” tried this year to organize a Witch House event with FLESH, PEAKi, Noire Antidote and me. But sadly was canceled. But I hope we can play live together in the future. I can tell you that Witch House music events are very very rare in Germany.

 

- Any anecdote that you want to share with us in the creation of some track?

No, there was nothing.

- Any news for 2021 in your music project or future collaborations?

Yes,  me and +d33b+ (artist from Argentina) are working together on a next EP at the moment. I think we will finished it in 2021. Otherwise I will for sure realease an album. My collaborations in 2021 will be with great artists like: ElektroTerapi, +d33b+, Antares Grim and Space one. 

 

- Any other thing that you want to say to your listeners?
