- What is the meaning and concept behind the name of your music project?
I've been using the name "David Attic" since i was 17, in 1990 i was dating a girl who at one point said i reminded her of a childhood imaginary friend named "David" who lived in her attic, and i liked that, so it's been my name ever since.
- What equipment do you use to create music?
For DAWs i use Serato Studio, Mixcraft, Bitwig, RipX, and Audacity. VSTs i mostly use Arturia (instruments/effects), XLN Audio (instruments/effects) and iZotope (effects/mastering). hardware I've used a couple of Akai MPK Mini controllers, a Numark dj controller, and i recently purchased an Arturia Minifreak.
- tell us about your Biography as artist
Creatively i started out in the early 1980s in hip hop, teaching myself how to scratch and mix, on terrible equipment (i was 12 so i had no money), took a few music keyboard (piano) courses in high school, then in the early '90s got a crappy 4-track Fostex cassette recorder and a Yamaha RY30 drum machine, and for most of the '90s i was making music, was in a few bands, djing at bars and nightclubs and the occasional rave - then a mix of burnout and life issues in the 2000s caused me to go on really long creative hiatus until 2020, then COVID hit and i decided to just dive right into making music again and have been working on things constantly ever since.
- which are your music / artistic Influences
LoL i could go on quite a bit here but i'll try to minimize it - Depeche Mode, Cure, New Order, Christian Death, Throbbing Gristle, Nurse With Wound, Broadcast, Coil, Burial, The Caretaker, Skinny Puppy, FLA, Aphex Twin, Whitehouse, My Bloody Valentine, Slowdive, Ryoji Ikeda, etc. as for art anything abstract and/or surrealistic and/or dark/creepy and/or "trippy". e.g. i really like the AI shorts that Myst Cult makes.
- favorite EP/Album composed by you?
I really don't have a lot of EPs/albums released as i upload mostly to soundcloud instead of platforms like bandcamp, but i'll go with the "back there e.p."
- favorite music platforms? why?
Soundcloud: when i first subscribed to a paid tier, i knew, being a nobody, my music wouldn't have much reach and treated it more like an online storage locker for my tracks - however over the past few years they've made big improvements for independents like me so now most of my tracks break 100 plays and sometimes get into thousands of plays (and not through artificial plays, i've looked into this), and through their Repost distribution backend my music is now on a lot of other streaming platforms. i find it funny that the naysayers talk about soundcloud as if it was still 2013.
Bandcamp: a great way to support artists and get high quality digital downloads and physical merchandise - however that platform doesn't favour independent creators who don't have a pre-existing following. i do think their stance on AI creatives is a bit harsh, and leaving it to the community to report "suspicious" content is not a great move, as it is lazy, and the haters have free reign to flag just about anything on there as being AI regardless of whether or not AI was used or to what extent.
Youtube: of course for the visual side of music.
- any funny anecdote in the composition of a track or album?
The track "sugar bowl" (on the "back there e.p.") was made as an audio reminder to buy a new sugar bowl as an accident had my last one at the time fall onto the kitchen floor and shatter completely - did buy a new sugar bowl but i hate it, so i'm still looking for a good one.
